Scrap metal plants in Thailand and China buy heavies from the EU and the US, from both IBA source and shredding plant source. The heavies (mixed metals) are sorted by hand by local workers. They are sorted by metal type (copper, brass, zinc), and during this process, the coins and other high value items are recovered from the scrap metal and put aside to be sold separately.
